On Monday afternoon we took Hannah to the eye doctor. We had noticed that her right eye seemed to not be tracking/crossing at some points, so our pediatrician said it would be good to have it checked out. Hannah actually did good during the 2+ hour appointment which included getting her eyes dilated, but the outcome was not that great. They told us that she has Duane Syndrome in her left eye (her right eye is actually fine...which the doctor demonstrated to us). Basically it means that she will never be able to turn her left eye out. It’s a nerve issue (the nerve either isn’t there or is miswired) and therefore cannot be repaired. She may have to have surgery after she is one or so to work on some of the muscles in that eye so that she doesn’t have a little head turn/tilt when she is looking straight ahead. Her vision looks good and she doesn’t seem to have any other problems due to this that they can see. We are still taking it all in and trying to gather as much information as possible. This of course is a rare form of Strabismus (affecting only 1% of the population) - so there's not a whole lot out there. We are going to go for a second opinion - and hopefully get more questions answered...since we were a little dumbfounded on Monday. We have faith that it will all be OK...and that are smiley little lady will be undaunted by this, as she has been so far.
